We had a mango tree in our backyard in Barbados and it brought us so much joy. We would eat huge, juicy mangoes and the best part is that they were free. This recipe reminds me of those good old days when life was simple and your soul felt free.
I wish we could go back to those days. When all that mattered was the present moment. I wonder why we felt like the grass was greener on the other side. We traded our simple island life for a concrete jungle and more money.
The truth is that there’s no going back. Those crystal clear waters and kind island people have all changed. You can only move forward;creating your piece of heaven where you’re currently planted.
I discovered this reality on my last trip back to Barbados. My childhood recollection of a perfect upbringing was somewhat trampled upon. This reality hit me as soon as I got off the plane. I expected to be greeted with the same enthusiasm as I felt inside.When I wasn’t, I immediately knew that my little Barbados had changed. Most of my trip felt like that.
I will go back though. However this time with zero expectations and only a promise to create the experience that I want to have.
This afro vegan recipe is made with Brazilian nuts and that it what gives it a mousse like texture. Brazilian nuts don’t need to be soaked because they don’t have any enzyme inhibitors. - 1 Cup Brazilian nuts
- 1/2 Cup maple syrup or sweetener
- 1 Cup water
